Devilman's demons bear the closest resemblance to those seen in Western lore, in that there is a Satan with a legion of devils under his control. This is also the only manga with a concept of "God," though here again the resemblance is very superficial. In Devilman, God has trapped Satan in a time loop as retribution for rebelling against him. God creates demons, Satan rebels, God traps them all inside a mountain, they break out and destroy the world, Satan realizes what he has done and regrets his actions, and the time loop resets.
Satan has both masculine and feminine physical traits
Devilman is also notable as a work of Japanese queer literature written in 1972. Satan self-describes as being "both a man and a woman" and has both masculine and feminine physical traits. In addition, during each time loop Satan lives on earth as a human man who falls in love with another man, the protagonist of the manga. It's their grief over killing this person that causes Satan to regret their uprising.
